Kid Conversations

A few nights ago we were sitting at our dinner table eating spaghetti. Out of nowhere, Kizzy lifts up her arm and proclaims, “I have hair growing under my arm.”

Stony and I look at each other and smile.  Then I smile at Kiz and say, “You know what that means?”

Very confidently she says, “That I am growing up!”

“Yep. And you know what that means?”

A little more hesitantly, “That I get to go to a different school.”

“Mmm, in a few years, yep. But you know what else it means?” She just looks at me like, could there really be more? I say, “It means that you have to start always acting respectfully and being responsible.”

Kizzy pauses and thinks for just a few seconds, the very sure of herself, she says “Oh, I can do that.”

“You know what else it means?”

Not believing that there is more, she cocks her head to the side and challengingly asks, “What?!”

“It also means you have to start shaving.” She pauses a long time this time. She kind of looks at me, then Stony, then under her arm. She raises it again after a minute of thinking and says, “Well, they are just kind of white, I don’t have to shave yet right?”
